A company's reputation isn't what it says about itself. It's what shows up in three specific places: independent review platforms a business can't edit, how the installation crew actually performs on site, and how the work holds up years after the sale. Anyone can put "trusted" in a headline. Verifying it takes checking a handful of concrete things before you sign a contract.
Start with reviews you can't fake
A company's own testimonials page is curated by definition — of course it only shows the good ones. The reviews worth reading live on platforms the company doesn't control: Google, HomeStars, BBB, and Facebook. Look for volume as well as score. A handful of five-star reviews means little; hundreds of them, spread across multiple independent platforms, is much harder to manufacture. It's also worth reading a few of the lower-rated reviews if any exist and seeing how the company responded — a professional, non-defensive reply to a complaint tells you more about how they'll handle a problem on your own project than a wall of five-star praise ever will.
Check whether third-party accreditation actually exists
Beyond star ratings, a few concrete accreditations are worth confirming directly rather than taking a company's word for: a BBB rating (and whether the business is accredited, not just listed), any manufacturer-specific certifications, and awards from review platforms themselves, such as a HomeStars Best Of designation, which is based on a minimum review volume and score threshold rather than something a company can simply claim.
Installation quality is the part reviews sometimes miss
A five-star review usually reflects the sales experience and the finished look. It doesn't always capture which installation standards the crew followed, whether the company remained accountable for the work, or whether they treated a genuinely different job — a full brick-to-brick replacement versus a retrofit — as the distinct methods they actually are rather than a one-size-fits-all approach. This is worth asking about directly during a quote: who is physically doing the installation, and what training do they have.
