How a Ferco Multi-Point Lock Actually Secures a Door

Last updated: August 22, 2026

Four points of engagement from a single turn of the handle — what that changes, where the design comes from, and why the extra seconds matter.

A single deadbolt secures a door at one point: wherever the bolt meets the strike plate, roughly waist height. A Ferco multi-point lock secures the same door at four points simultaneously — top, two in the middle, and bottom — from a single turn of the handle. That difference in engagement is the entire reason a properly installed multi-point system changes how long a door actually holds up against someone trying to force it.

What "four points" actually means

When the handle turns, three locking points engage at once alongside the deadbolt: one near the top of the door, one at the centre, and one near the bottom, in addition to the deadbolt itself completing the fourth point of engagement along the door's height. Rather than one bolt resisting force at a single spot, the door is held to the frame across its entire vertical length. Prying or kicking at any one point has to overcome resistance from the other three simultaneously, not just the point being attacked.

Where the design comes from

Ferco is part of the Gretsch-Unitas (GU) group, a German-headquartered hardware manufacturer with a long history in multi-point locking systems for European windows and doors. The engineering principle — distributed engagement along the full door height rather than a single strike point — originated in that European hardware tradition and has since become a standard security upgrade for entry doors in North America.

What sizes it fits

This lock system is available for doors ranging from 79.5" up to 8' and 9' in height, and from 28" up to 42" and 48" in width, fitting both fiberglass and steel entry doors. That range covers everything from a standard single entry door to taller and wider custom openings, including double-door configurations, without requiring a different security approach for each size.

Why the time difference matters more than it sounds

A door secured at a single point can typically be forced in well under 10 seconds if someone is determined and has the right tool. A properly installed multi-point system extends that dramatically, and it's not just a manufacturer's claim: a Trust Build customer's own security footage captured an actual break-in attempt against a Ferco-equipped door, and the intruder was still working at it after roughly two and a half minutes before giving up. That's the practical difference this hardware is built to create: not an impossible barrier, but enough resistance and enough time that most attempts fail or get abandoned before they succeed.

Added protection beyond the lock: pairing a multi-point lock with protective security film on the door glass or sidelight glass closes a second entry method, since glass breakage is a common way around even a well-secured door. Together, the two address both the lock and the glass as separate points of vulnerability.

A finish detail worth mentioning

Beyond the mechanism itself, genuine Ferco lock plates are available in a range of finishes, giving the hardware a distinct, higher-end look rather than the generic strike plate finish found on standard single-point hardware. On a door where the handle and lock plate are one of the first things a visitor notices, that detail carries real curb-appeal value alongside the security function.

FAQ

Frequently asked questions

It's compatible with both fiberglass and steel entry doors within a specific size range, from 79.5 inches up to 9 feet in height and 28 inches up to 48 inches in width. Compatibility with a specific existing door should be confirmed during a quote, since exact door construction can affect installation.
The deadbolt is one of the four engagement points in the system, not a separate component. Turning the handle engages the deadbolt along with the three additional locking points at once, so the system functions as one integrated mechanism rather than a deadbolt plus add-on hardware.
A multi-point lock secures the door itself, but glass panels in or beside the door are a separate potential entry point if someone breaks the glass to reach the interior handle or lock. Security film adds resistance at that specific vulnerability, addressing a different weak point than the lock hardware does.
