Installation Methods

How Trust Build installs your windows

Installation quality is as important as glass performance, Energy Rating (ER), U-Value and SHGC. A premium window installed poorly will underperform a mid-tier window installed correctly. Trust Build is an installation-first company focused on proper building-envelope integration — here are the four methods we use and when each one is the right choice.

Brick-to-Brick Installation

Trust Build Premium Method

Trust Build's most common premium installation. The existing window is removed to the brick opening and the old frame is taken out. The opening and existing insulation are inspected, additional insulation is added where required, the new window is set into the original brick opening, the exterior perimeter is sealed and protected, and new aluminum capping is installed. Interior finishes are preserved where possible — this is not the same as a North American full-tear-out 'full-frame replacement'.

  • Larger glass area than retrofit installation
  • Better air sealing and perimeter insulation
  • Allows inspection of the opening condition
  • Maintains the original window size
  • Preserves interior finishes where possible

Best for: Homeowners who want maximum performance and proper envelope sealing without major interior reconstruction.

Stud-to-Stud Installation

Full Reconstruction

The most extensive installation method. The window and surrounding construction materials are removed and the opening is exposed to the structural framing. Damaged materials can be repaired or replaced, openings can be modified or resized, and new insulation and waterproofing are installed before the new window or door is set into the rebuilt opening.

  • Allows structural repairs
  • Allows resizing of openings
  • Allows window-to-door conversions
  • Provides complete access to the building envelope
  • Ideal for egress and major renovation projects

Best for: Enlarging windows, window-to-door conversions, structural repairs, egress window projects and major remodeling projects.

Retrofit Installation

Insert Installation

The existing frame remains in place and the new window is installed within it. Interior and exterior finishes stay largely untouched — a faster, lower-cost option when the existing frame is in excellent structural condition. There is a slight reduction in glass area, and full inspection of the rough opening isn't possible.

  • Faster installation
  • Lower installation cost
  • Minimal disruption
  • Preserves existing interior and exterior finishes

Best for: Homes where the existing frame is structurally sound and free of water damage.

Split-Frame Installation

Trust Build Specialty Method

A specialized method commonly used with vinyl windows. The exterior portion of the existing frame is removed while the interior frame components remain intact — existing interior casing and trim are preserved, and the new window is integrated into the existing interior frame structure. Provides more glass area than most retrofits and allows exterior weatherproofing upgrades.

  • Preserves interior finishes and existing trim
  • Minimizes drywall and repainting work
  • More glass area than most retrofits
  • Allows exterior waterproofing and capping upgrades

Best for: Homes with premium interior wood trim, recently renovated interiors, and vinyl window replacement projects where preserving interior finishes matters.

Not every home qualifies for retrofit or split-frame

Before recommending an installation method, Trust Build evaluates existing frame condition, moisture exposure, structural integrity, air leakage and the overall condition of the opening. The right method is determined after on-site inspection to ensure long-term performance and durability — not chosen on price alone.

Installation quality is equally important as glass performance, Energy Rating (ER), U-Value and SHGC values.

FAQ

Prime Wood Windows — Frequently Asked Questions

Prime Wood Windows are premium, fully-custom windows crafted from select solid wood species. Each unit is hand-finished, joinery-grade, and built to architectural specification — the same construction standard used in heritage restoration and luxury custom homes across Ontario.
Our Prime Wood line is offered in pine, oak, and maple as standard species, with mahogany, cherry, walnut, and Douglas fir available on request. Each species offers a distinct grain pattern, tone, and stain receptivity — your product specialist will bring physical samples to your home.
For traditional, heritage, transitional, and warm-modern interiors there is simply no substitute. Real wood adds depth, warmth, and authenticity that synthetic materials cannot replicate. It is the reason high-end architects and interior designers continue to specify solid wood for their flagship projects.
Yes. Pine and maple accept paint beautifully — historically white, cream, off-white, sage, or deep accent colours. Oak and walnut shine under clear, natural, honey, or rich espresso stains. We offer factory-applied finishes with multi-step sealing for long-term durability, plus full custom colour matching.
Wood is naturally one of the most thermally insulating window materials — significantly better than aluminum without a thermal break. Combined with double or triple-pane Low-E glass, argon or krypton fill, and warm-edge spacers, our wood windows meet and exceed Energy Star requirements for Ontario.
Modern factory-finished wood windows are dramatically lower maintenance than the older sash windows people remember. Interior wood is sealed and finished like fine furniture. The exterior is typically clad in aluminum (an aluminum-clad wood window) for full weather protection — leaving you the beauty of real wood inside and a maintenance-free exterior.
The window frame and sash are built from solid wood — that is what you see and touch from inside the home. The exterior face is wrapped in a thin, factory-finished extruded aluminum cladding in your choice of colour. You get the warmth of real wood interior with weatherproof, maintenance-free exterior performance.
Wood is the only authentic choice for true heritage restoration and traditional architecture — Victorian, Georgian, Edwardian, Craftsman, French Country, and English Tudor. Profiles, sticking, divided lites, and hardware can all be matched to original detail.
Absolutely. Modern wood windows with clean profiles, oversized openings, and warm natural finishes (often light oak or rift-sawn white oak) are central to warm-modern, Scandinavian, and biophilic architecture trends.
A properly built and installed wood window has a service life of 50+ years — easily outlasting most synthetic alternatives. Heritage homes across Ontario still carry their original wood windows after a century. With modern engineering and finishes, lifespan is even longer.
Yes — every traditional grille pattern is available, including true divided lites (each pane individually glazed), simulated divided lites (SDL), and applied grilles. Custom patterns including diamond, prairie, colonial, and architect-drawn custom layouts are standard.
Prime Wood is our flagship premium product — typically 2 to 4 times the price of comparable vinyl. The investment reflects the wood species, joinery, multi-step factory finishing, custom sizing, and craftsmanship. They are specified for projects where the result must be exceptional.
Yes — aluminum-clad wood windows pair solid wood interiors (your species and finish) with a powder-coated aluminum exterior in your colour choice. This is the most popular configuration for new luxury construction.
Double-hung, single-hung, casement, awning, picture, fixed, tilt-and-turn, bay, bow, and fully custom shapes including arched, half-round, octagonal, and trapezoid. All built to exact opening dimensions.
Manufacturer warranty on the wood frame, factory finish, sealed glass unit, and hardware (varying by component, typically 10 to 25 years) plus Trust Build's lifetime workmanship warranty on the installation.
Yes — Trust Build collaborates with architects, designers, and custom home builders across Southern Ontario. We provide shop drawings, finish samples, mock-ups, and coordinate installation timing for new builds and luxury renovations.
