Our Verdict

If front-door security and the lowest installed price are your priorities, go steel. If you want maximum insulation, the lowest long-term maintenance, and a finish that can look like real wood, go fiberglass. For most Ontario front doors that face weather and the street, we recommend fiberglass — for back, garage and side entries, steel is usually the smarter spend.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

Steel doors are typically 25–40% less expensive than comparable fiberglass doors. The price gap narrows on premium steel models with stainable wood-look skins.
Steel — the slab itself is harder to breach. That said, security on any door is dominated by the deadbolt grade, strike plate and frame reinforcement, not just the slab material.
Fiberglass. The composite skin doesn't conduct cold the way a steel skin does, so fiberglass doors usually deliver a slightly higher R-value at the same core thickness.
Modern steel doors are galvanized and primed before painting. They don't rust like an old steel door if the paint is maintained — but a deep scratch left exposed can corrode.
Fiberglass — it won't dent, rust or warp, and the skin holds up to decades of sun and weather. Steel can last just as long if it's not dented or scratched through to bare metal.
