What Is a Fixed Casement Window?

A sealed, non-operable window built to match our casement profile

A fixed casement window in Ontario is a sealed, non-operable window built on the same frame and sash profile as a standard casement — but without the crank, hinges, or moving parts. It looks identical to an operable casement from the curb, which is exactly the point: you can place fixed and opening casements side by side and the sightlines line up seamlessly. Because nothing moves, the unit is sealed tight permanently, with no operating hardware to maintain.

Why Fixed Casement Windows Suit Ontario Homes

Maximum light and efficiency where ventilation isn't needed

Higher efficiency, lower cost

With no operating mechanism, a fixed unit has fewer points where air can escape and a lower price than an operable window of the same size.

Seamless combinations

Because the profile matches our operable casements, you can frame a large opening with venting casements on either side and keep one continuous look.

A permanent weather seal

Nothing to crank loose over time — the sash stays fixed and airtight through every Ontario season.

More design freedom

Without hardware to accommodate, fixed casements can be built in larger sizes and custom shapes that operable windows can't.

Engineered For Ontario

Triple-Pane Glass Unit

Fixed casements are an ideal home for our triple-pane glass unit, because efficiency is their entire job. Three panes and two argon-filled chambers slow heat transfer dramatically, a dual Low-E coating manages solar heat in both directions, and a Super Spacer® warm-edge spacer cuts the cold bridge at the glass edge. Built with Cardinal Glass insulated units, and with no operable seal to rely on, a fixed unit's performance comes almost entirely from the glass package — which is why this triple-pane glass unit lets a fixed casement reach the upper end of what's possible for energy efficiency in an Ontario home. Double-pane is available where the exposure allows.

Triple-pane construction

Three panes of glass separated by two insulating chambers.

Argon gas fill

A denser-than-air insulator that slows heat transfer through the glass unit.

Dual Low-E coating

Reflects warmth back into your home in winter and deflects solar heat in summer.

Warm-edge spacer

Reduces the cold bridge at the window's perimeter, where condensation and heat loss begin.

Tested Energy Performance

Fixed model CV-F

Values from certified testing of Trust Build window systems using NRCan / ENERGY STAR® metrics — Energy Rating (ER), U-Value, and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).

Glass PackageERU-ValueSHGC
Double-pane (CV-F)391.450.53
Triple-pane (CV-F)470.850.44

Higher ER and lower U-Value indicate better energy performance. Values are derived from certified product testing and may vary by size, configuration, and glass package.

Where Fixed Casement Windows Work Best

Light without ventilation, view without compromise

Fixed casements shine wherever you want light without ventilation. They're a natural fit flanking a large central window, filling transom openings above doors, brightening stairwells and hallways, and capturing a view in rooms that already have enough airflow. Many Ontario homeowners use them in combination layouts — a wide fixed centre with venting casements on each side — to get a big, bright wall of glass that still breathes.

Customization

Finished to match your home

Fixed casements take the same finishing options as the rest of our window line: a choice of exterior frame colours, internal or simulated divided-lite grilles in several patterns, and specialty glass such as tinted or frosted where privacy or light control matters. With no operating hardware, you also have extra freedom in sizing and shape.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A fixed casement is a sealed, non-opening window built on the same frame and sash profile as an operable casement, so the two match perfectly when installed side by side — but it has no crank, hinges, or moving parts.
Fixed windows cost less than operable units of the same size, seal tighter because nothing moves, and are perfect for rooms that already have enough ventilation or for spots where you simply want more light and view.
Yes — often the most efficient option available. With no operating seal to depend on, performance comes from the glass package, so a fixed casement with Trust Build's triple-pane glass unit, argon fill, dual Low-E, and Super Spacer® warm-edge spacer reaches an Energy Rating of 47 and a U-Value of 0.85 in triple-pane — the top end of efficiency for Ontario homes.
Yes. Because they share the same profile as our operable casements, you can pair a fixed centre window with venting casements on either side for a seamless, continuous look.
Fixed casements are made to your exact openings, and without operating hardware they can be built in larger sizes and custom shapes that opening windows can't accommodate.
Very little. There's no hardware to lubricate or adjust — occasional glass cleaning is all that's needed.
ENERGY STAR® certified windows may qualify for the Home Renovation Savings™ program — up to $100 per rough opening, with a home energy assessment required before work begins. We'll confirm how it applies to your project. Full details at homerenovationsavings.ca.
