Glass & Security

Sliding sashes, smarter glass choices

Slider windows ventilate by sliding one sash horizontally past the other. Because the sashes overlap rather than compressing against the frame, the glass package has to compensate for a slightly looser air seal — which is why we always recommend triple-pane Cardinal IG with a Low-E coating on our sliders, not double-pane.

For ground-floor sliders, especially those that face a side yard or a quiet back street, we strongly suggest a laminated inner pane. The horizontal lock on a slider is solid, but laminated glass closes the second-most-common forced-entry path — breaking the glass to reach the latch.

Triple pane + Low-E 272 + argon

Trust Build's slider standard. Compensates for the looser slide-against seal and meets Energy Star in every Canadian zone.

Laminated inner pane

Strongly recommended on ground-floor sliders — defeats break-and-reach forced entry without changing the look.

Tempered glass

Required by code on any slider within 18" of a finished floor or adjacent to a patio door.

Acoustic laminated

For sliders on bedroom walls facing busy streets — adds 6-8 STC of noise reduction.

Security Window Film: Security Window Film is one of the most cost-effective upgrades for existing slider windows where replacing the glass isn't in the budget yet. Learn more about Security Film →

Yes — every install includes a new frame, weather stripping and interior/exterior trim. We don't do glass-only retrofits.

A modern Trust Build slider with the factory multi-point latch is solid. The vulnerability is the glass itself — a slider's lock is positioned right at the meeting rail, so an intruder who breaks the glass can reach in and operate the latch. Laminated glass or security film closes that gap.
Sliders rely on a brush-style weatherstrip between the sashes rather than a compression seal, so they're slightly more prone to air infiltration than casements. Triple-pane Low-E argon offsets the difference and brings the unit's overall U-value into the same range as a triple-pane casement.
