What Is a Hung Window?

The classic Ontario window, with a modern tilt-in twist

A hung window in Ontario opens vertically, with one or both sashes sliding up and down within the frame rather than swinging out. It's the timeless, traditional window style you'll recognize on heritage and classic Ontario homes — clean, symmetrical, and unobtrusive. Trust Build builds hung windows in two configurations, single hung tilt and double hung tilt, both with sashes that tilt inward so you can clean the exterior glass from inside.

Two Hung Configurations

Single hung tilt or double hung tilt

Single Hung Tilt

The bottom sash slides up to open while the top sash stays fixed. The operable bottom sash tilts inward for easy cleaning from inside. It's the simpler, more cost-effective hung window — a great fit for traditional facades and budget-conscious projects.

Double Hung Tilt

Both the top and bottom sashes slide, so you can open the window from the top, the bottom, or both at once for better airflow. Both sashes tilt inward, making cleaning effortless even on upper floors. It's the more versatile choice when ventilation flexibility and easy maintenance matter.

Why Hung Windows Suit Ontario Homes

Classic proportions, climate-ready performance

Timeless, traditional style

Their balanced, symmetrical look complements heritage homes and classic Ontario architecture.

Tilt-in cleaning

Both configurations tilt inward, so you can clean the outside glass from inside — a real advantage on second and third storeys.

Flexible ventilation (double hung)

Open the top sash, the bottom sash, or both to control airflow and let warm air escape from the top.

Space-saving operation

Nothing swings outward, so hung windows suit porches, walkways, and patios.

Engineered For Ontario

Triple-Pane Glass Unit

Trust Build hung windows are available with our triple-pane glass unit — three panes of glass, two argon-filled chambers, a dual Low-E coating that reflects winter warmth inward and deflects summer solar heat, and a Super Spacer® warm-edge spacer that reduces heat loss at the glass edge. Built with Cardinal Glass insulated units, it brings modern, cold-climate efficiency to a traditional window style. Double-pane is available where the exposure allows.

Triple-pane construction

Three panes of glass separated by two insulating chambers.

Argon gas fill

A denser-than-air insulator that slows heat transfer through the glass unit.

Dual Low-E coating

Reflects warmth back into your home in winter and deflects solar heat in summer.

Warm-edge spacer

Reduces the cold bridge at the window's perimeter, where condensation and heat loss begin.

Where Hung Windows Work Best

A natural fit for traditional and heritage Ontario homes

Hung windows are the natural choice for traditional and heritage-style Ontario homes, where their symmetrical proportions keep the facade authentic. Because nothing swings outward, they're well suited to porches, walkways, and tight side yards. A single hung tilt is a clean, economical option for bedrooms and secondary rooms, while a double hung tilt is ideal where you want top-and-bottom ventilation and easy cleaning — living rooms, upper floors, and anywhere airflow control matters.

Customization

Finished to match your home

Match your hung windows to your home's character: choose from a range of exterior frame colours, add grilles in traditional patterns such as colonial or prairie to suit a heritage look, and select specialty glass such as tinted or frosted for light control and privacy. Single hung tilt and double hung tilt configurations are both available.

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

A hung window opens vertically, with one or both sashes sliding up and down within the frame instead of swinging out. It's the classic, traditional window style common on heritage and conventional Ontario homes.
In a single hung tilt, only the bottom sash slides and tilts in while the top sash is fixed. In a double hung tilt, both sashes slide and tilt in — so you can open the window from the top, the bottom, or both, and clean both sashes from inside.
A double hung gives you more ventilation control — you can lower the top sash to let warm air escape, raise the bottom sash for fresh air, or open both. It also makes cleaning easier since both sashes tilt in. A single hung is simpler and more budget-friendly.
