What Is an Awning Window?

A top-hinged window that shelters the opening

An awning window in Ontario is hinged along the top and cranks open outward from the bottom, creating a small "awning" of glass that shelters the opening. Because the sash angles down and away, you can leave it open for ventilation during a light rain without water coming inside. When closed, the sash presses up into the frame against weatherstripping on all sides — giving awning windows a tight, energy-efficient seal much like a casement.

Why Awning Windows Suit Ontario Homes

Fresh air in any weather, a tight seal in winter

Ventilation in any weather

The outward-and-down sash sheds light rain, so you can keep fresh air moving even on a wet Ontario day.

An airtight seal

The crank pulls the sash tight against the frame all around, making awnings one of the more efficient operable styles.

Flexible placement

Their wide, short shape suits spots where other windows don't fit — high on a wall, above a counter, or below a larger picture window.

Privacy with light

Mounted high, they bring in daylight and air while keeping sightlines private.

Engineered For Ontario

Triple-Pane Glass Unit

Trust Build awning windows are available with our triple-pane glass unit — three panes, two argon-filled chambers, a dual Low-E coating that reflects winter warmth inward and deflects summer solar heat, and a Super Spacer® warm-edge spacer that reduces heat loss at the glass edge. Built with Cardinal Glass insulated units, the glass package works with the awning's compression seal to deliver strong year-round performance in Ontario's climate. Double-pane is available where the exposure allows.

Triple-pane construction

Three panes of glass separated by two insulating chambers.

Argon gas fill

A denser-than-air insulator that slows heat transfer through the glass unit.

Dual Low-E coating

Reflects warmth back into your home in winter and deflects solar heat in summer.

Warm-edge spacer

Reduces the cold bridge at the window's perimeter, where condensation and heat loss begin.

Tested Energy Performance

Values from certified testing of Trust Build window systems using NRCan / ENERGY STAR® metrics — Energy Rating (ER), U-Value, and Solar Heat Gain Coefficient (SHGC).

Higher ER and lower U-Value indicate better energy performance. Values are derived from certified product testing and may vary by size, configuration, and glass package. Double-pane values will be added when certified testing is complete.

Where Awning Windows Work Best

Flexible placement for every room

Awning windows are one of the most flexible styles for placement. Mounted high on a wall, they ventilate kitchens and bathrooms while keeping the view private. They're a natural fit below or beside large picture windows, adding airflow without breaking up the glass. Their rain-shedding design also makes them popular for basements and laundry rooms where you want air movement even in wet weather. Anywhere a tall window won't fit, an awning often will.

Customization

Finished to match your home

Finish your awning windows to match your home: choose from a range of exterior frame colours, add grilles in patterns that suit your architecture, and select specialty glass such as tinted or frosted for light control and privacy — a popular choice for bathrooms and high-placement windows.

Glass & Security

Small windows, big role in the glass plan

Awnings are usually installed high on a wall — above kitchen counters, in bathrooms, or stacked over fixed picture windows. The smaller glass area means the package upgrade cost is modest, but because awnings sit close to the ceiling where solar gain heats the whole room, the Low-E coating choice matters more than people expect.

We install awnings with triple-pane Cardinal IG glass and argon fill as the standard, then tune the Low-E coating to the room's exposure. Bathroom awnings nearly always get tempered glass per Ontario code, and we add an obscure or frosted pattern on request for privacy without losing daylight.

Triple pane + Low-E 272

Standard package. Energy Star certified. Excellent fit for kitchens, bathrooms and laundry rooms.

Tempered + obscure

Bathroom and shower-adjacent awnings — code-compliant safety glass with frosted privacy.

Triple pane + Low-E 366

For awnings on south-facing walls above large picture windows where solar gain stacks up.

Laminated security

Optional on ground-floor or basement-level awnings for forced-entry resistance.

Security Window Film: Security Window Film is rarely needed on a small awning, but Privacy Film is a popular retrofit for existing bathroom awnings that lack obscure glass. Learn more about Security Film →

FAQ

Frequently Asked Questions

An awning window is hinged along the top and cranks open outward from the bottom, forming a small shelter of glass over the opening. This design lets it ventilate even during light rain.
Yes — within reason. Because the sash angles outward and downward, it sheds light rain while still letting air in, which is why awnings are popular in Ontario's changeable weather. In heavy rain or storms, it's best to close any window.
Yes. The crank pulls the sash tight against weatherstripping on all sides for an airtight seal, and with Trust Build's triple-pane glass unit, argon fill, dual Low-E, and Super Spacer® warm-edge spacer, our awning reaches an Energy Rating of 41 and a U-Value of 0.90 in triple-pane.
They work well mounted high for private ventilation in kitchens and bathrooms, below or beside picture windows for added airflow, and in basements and laundry rooms. Their wide, short shape suits spots where taller windows won't fit.
Yes. Trust Build awnings use a multi-point locking system that fastens the sash firmly to the frame, making them difficult to force.
Very little — clean the glass as needed and occasionally lubricate the crank so it operates smoothly. The frames resist moisture, warping, and fading.
ENERGY STAR® certified windows may qualify for the Home Renovation Savings™ program — up to $100 per rough opening, with a home energy assessment required before work begins. Our team will confirm how it applies to your home. Full details at homerenovationsavings.ca.
If any part of the glass is within 60 inches of a tub or shower floor, yes — Ontario building code requires tempered or laminated safety glass. We flag this automatically during the project assessment and include the tempered upgrade at no extra cost.
Yes. We offer factory-frosted, obscure pattern (rain, narrow reed, glue chip) and sandblasted custom patterns. All can be combined with the triple-pane and tempered upgrades the room needs.
